Congress pushes NSA to weaponize AI defenses before China strikes first.
A bipartisan group in Congress has introduced the Advanced AI Security Readiness Act, which tasks the NSA with creating an “AI Security Playbook” to defend U.S. AI systems from foreign cyber threats.
Led by Reps. Moolenaar, Krishnamoorthi, LaHood, and Gottheimer, the bill aims to identify and fix vulnerabilities in AI models, training methods, algorithms, and infrastructure. It will also define when federal oversight is needed for advanced AI and propose strict safeguards—like personnel vetting and emergency response plans.
The playbook will have two versions: a classified NSA guide and a public best-practices manual for industry.
With rising cyber threats from nations like China, lawmakers argue AI must be treated as a strategic national asset. The bill promotes deep collaboration between the NSA, AI developers, and research institutions, including facility reviews and expert panels.
