Inside OpenAI’s Arctic Supercluster: 100,000 GPUs by 2026

Europe’s frozen north is heating up with AI arms race energy.

OpenAI is partnering with Nscale and Aker ASA to build a massive 100,000-GPU compute cluster in Kvandal, Norway by 2026, as part of its Stargate initiative. The Arctic-based facility will start with a $1 billion, 20-megawatt deployment — powered by local hydroelectric energy and cooled with advanced liquid systems — and can eventually scale to 520 megawatts. It aims to serve European AI needs, while also offering spare capacity to neighboring regions and supporting government-led AI sovereignty programs. This move follows similar Stargate expansions in the UAE and a 4.5GW deal with Oracle.
